Introduction to Biological Resources Programme (BRP)

Biological resources refer to the sum of genes and species, including plants, animals, microorganisms, and human genetic resources, that have real and potential value to humans, and can be directly or indirectly used by humans in nature. Biological resources are the basic components of the ecosystem and the important material basis for human survival. They are an important foundation for national economic development and ecological environmental protection.

The “Twelfth Five-Year Plan” of the Chinese Academy of Sciences launched the Biological Resources Programme (BRP-CAS), which focus on serving social development and supporting scientific research. BRP-CAS integrates the Botanical Gardens, Biological Specimen Collections, Biological Genetic Resource Bank, Laboratory Animal Resources and China Biodiversity Observation and Research Network of Chinese Academy of Sciences, and builds an integration resource system. On the basis of persisting in the long-term collection and preservation of biological resources, BRP-CAS aims to realize the analysis, evaluation and utilization of resources and promote the digitalization and informatization, and provide resource, talent and technical support for the completion of important scientific researches.

BRP-CAS has formed a “5+3+1” organizational structure, namely five resource collection and preservation platforms, three resource evaluation and transformation platforms and one information center. Scientific advisory board and management board are established to provide guidance and management BRP.

The Botanical Garden Working Committee of the Chinese Academy of Sciences contains 15 botanical gardens (arboreta) and aims to further enhance the management level of scientific conservation of plants, increase the reserve of national plant resources, promote a higher level development of botanical gardens, and provide supports for the implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity and the concept of “Lucid Waters and Lush Mountains are Invaluable Assets”through improving the conservation conditions of plants and strengthening plant introduction, especially the introduction of rare and endangered plants.

Innovative Platform of Plant Germplasm Resources of the Chinese Academy of Sciences

The Innovative Platform of Plant Germplasm Resources of the Chinese Academy of Sciences aims to strengthen the collection and enhance the utilization of plant germplasm resources. The platform focuses on five types of characteristic plant groups: medicinal and health care plants, flower and fruit plant, environmental improvement plants, industrial raw material plants and new model plants. This platform emphasizes the elementariness, systematization and perspectiveness of the research, and focuses on breaking through the technical bottlenecks in the development and utilization of plant resources. The Innovative Platform of Plant Germplasm Resources highlights the industrial development of plant germplasm resource and pays great attention to deep excavation, evaluation, and cooperation with enterprise. The comprehensive ability of collection, preservation, evaluation, transformation and sustainable utilization of plant germplasm resources has been greatly enhanced. This platform supports and serves the bio-industry development and provides strong scientific and technological supports for food security, energy independence and sustainable economic and social development of China.

  • The new cultivars of Lonicera caerulea provide technical support for developing Northeast of China characteristic industry and forestry economy.

  • 85 cultivars of domestic and foreign orchids, and more than 200 good hybrid parents are collected. It has successfully achieved the large-scale tissue culture propagation of Cypripedium corrugatum.

Integrative Information Center

The Biological Resources Information Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences integrates digital information and research data of biological resources, establishes a biological resource information management and service platform for the Chinese Academy of Sciences through applying advanced information and data technologies. Data sharing, mining, value are enhanced, which supports scientific research and social applications in the field of biological resources, provides rich information and data services for the development of bio-industry in China.
